Craft Project: Scrap Fabric Wreath

Craft Project-Scrap Fabric Wreath

Christmas is now over which means all of my decorations are finally coming down. This also means my beautiful Christmas wreath has to be removed from my front door, and until recently I didn’t have a wintery wreath to replace it. Yesterday I decided it was time to sit down and make a scrap fabric wreath to fill the void Christmas left on my front door.

I have seen this type of wreath done before, and I had plans to make one myself. A lot of people will re-purpose their scrap fabric for this project, but because I wanted specific colors I headed to my local fabric store. Luckily, Hancock Fabric was having a 50% off sale and I was able to use cotton quilting fabric, which is already on the cheap end. I picked out three variations of white and off white, a gray, green, and mustard yellow felt.

In addition to the fabric you also need a hot glue gun, scissors, and a wreath form. I spoke with someone who made one from a wire form, she tied the fabric around the individual wire rings. I wanted to make the cheapest wreath possible, so I went to Walmart to scope out options. I was pleased to find a medium/small size garland wreath on sale for $0.60! I took it home, and quickly wrapped it in strips of fabric to cover the garland. This was an extra step, but only took 30 minutes and a few glue sticks to complete.

Next, I began cutting my strips of fabric. I used about 2 yards total, but my wreath is a little smaller. Depending on your wreath size I would assume 2-3 yards of fabric. I cut my strips into 1″x8″ pieces, you may have to adjust this size depending on the thickness of your wreath form.

Once all of the strips were cut, I began tying them around my wreath form. I mixed up all of my off white strips, that way they would be randomly placed in the wreath. As I tied my knots I tried to consciously tie them going in different directions. Every now and then stop, take a step back, and see if there are areas that need to have fabric added.

After I had my off white strips covering the entire form, I went back with the gray. I wanted it to only be on one side, and be more concentrated on either side of my fabric flowers. I tied them close together, and then spaced them out as I moved away from the areas the flowers would attach to. Once I finished the gray, I added green strips in the area the flowers would be on top of.

Craft Project-Felt Flower How To

Once my wreath was filled with fabric strips it was time to add my felt flowers. They are incredibly simple to make, and they look amazing! To create one all you have to do is follow six easy steps:

Step One: Cut a circle out of your felt.

Step Two: Cut the circle into a spiral.

Step Three: Put a dot of hot glue in the center, and curl the center piece of felt around.

Step Four: Roll the center along the spiral cut out. Keep the top edge of the fabric even, this will create an inverted cone shape on the inside of the flower, but you will never see that.

Step Five: Place a dot of glue on the end of the fabric to keep it from unrolling.

Step Six: Put hot glue on the wreath and the bottom of the flower. Place it on the wreath and press down on the top of the flower with the palm of your hand. This ensures the flower is stuck to the form and it mashes the layers of felt flat, which gives it a petal look.

Once your wreath is complete, hang it on your door end enjoy! I have yet to find a wreath hanger that hangs low enough on my door, so I used leftover fabric to hang my wreath. I tied it around the top, and tied it around a small nail I have nailed into the top of the door. I nailed it in just low enough to not get in the way of the door opening and closing.

I love the look of my wintery wreath! I run risk of the fabric deteriorating because it is outside, exposed to the elements. However, I have had yarn wreaths hung outside for long periods of time with no problem! I hope I won’t have issues with this one either.

I hope you enjoyed today’s post! Share the love and help my spread the word about my blog my sharing, subscribing, liking, tweeting, and sending to others! Thanks for stopping by!
